Ebola is a worm-like virus (filovirus, family filoviridae). The viruses have a helical central core containing single-stranded RNA. A matrix protein layer surrounds the core and lies immediately beneath the viral envelope. The envelope comes from the host cell when the virus buds. Knobs (glycoprotein spikes) cover the virus and let it attach to target cells.
